Dear Harry: I am a member of one of the "helping" professions, and I have my own practice. Back in 2006, I was one of three candidates for national president of our professional group. In the course of the campaign, I spent about $1,800 to promote my candidacy. The IRS is now questioning those expenses. The examiner insists that these were "personal expenses" and thus not deductible.
