Police in Oxford, Pa. on the lookout for car theft suspect

UPDATE: The suspect that fled police setting off the lockdown was captured by Maryland State Police around 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to Pennsylvania State Troopers.

Some scary moments Monday for people in one Chester County town after a car theft suspect flees police causing six Oxford Area School District schools to be put on lockdown.

Police were pursuing a man who allegedly swiped a car in Maryland and ended up Route 472 in the area of Oxford Road in East Nottingham, according to state police.

Around 8 a.m. the suspect stopped his car he jumped out and fled on foot, police said.

He is described as a white male in his 30s, about 180 pounds with a short beard. It is unknown if he is armed, police said.

As a precaution area schools were locked down and the early dismissal planned for Monday was canceled.

Per the district’s website:

Due to police activity in the Oxford area the Oxford Area School District will delay the scheduled early dismissal of Monday, March 19. Law enforcement officials have requested that parents/guardians not come to campus until further notice. This will help to ensure the safety of our students, which is the district's paramount concern.

All district schools will remain under lockdown, with no students leaving the building during this time.

Police were searching the area of Hickory Hill Road and Oxford Road.

As of 1:30 p.m. there was still no word on the whereabouts of the suspect.

At the same time, Oxford Area secondary schools began to dismiss with all elementary schools set to let out at 2:30 p.m.
