You don’t need a monster budget to make a truly terrifying movie, and writer/director Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity is proof.
Here’s the story. The film, which was shot in seven days on a $15,000 budget, debuted with midnight screenings in 13 college towns in mid-September. Paramount asked the test audiences to vote on the movie’s website whether they wished to have the movie play at their local cinemas.
The result? 200,000 people voted to bring the film to their cities.
Thanks to those who voted, you can see the movie Thursday night at a midnight at The Bridge: cinema de lux in Philadelphia.
Apparently Steven Spielberg was so creeped out by it, that he is now a strong supporter of the film.
But what’s it about?
The plot is simple. A young couple moves into their first home, only to find that some strange disturbances occur in the house while they sleep. The pair then sets up cameras to get to the bottom of the mystery, and what follows can only be described as a series of increasingly disturbing incidents.
The film itself is in the same vein as The Blair Witch Project, in that it was shot entirely with handheld cameras from the couple’s perspective.
You can catch midnight screenings on Friday and Saturday night.
But good luck going to bed after this one. There are numerous reports of people being so creeped out that they have trouble sleeping after seeing Paranormal Activity.
