Axl Rose is supposedly bringing Guns N’ Roses to the Philly region.
No, it’s not 1992, it’s modern day.
Almost a decade after no-showing to a scheduled concert at the then First Union Center and nearly 20 years after Axl stopped a song to curse out an unruly fan at the Spectrum, legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses is set to return to the Delaware Valley.
No exact date was set but on Wednesday the band, which now consists of front man Axl Rose, long-time keyboardist Dizzy Reed and basically a bunch of hired hands, announced that they would be embarking on their first U.S. tour in five years and that Camden, N.J. was on the agenda.
Axl, renowned for not only his antics on stage but off, was once one of the biggest rock stars alive. But after the classic lineup of GNR (including Slash, Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin) disbanded in the early 90s Rose has continued to feud with Slash as his music career plummeted.
After a 15-year wait between studio albums, GNR released Chinese Democracy in 2008. Since his band has toured mostly overseas.
The last time the new GNR tried to play the Philly area it became a disaster as the band failed to show up on stage for a sold-out show in Dec. 2002.
Once it became clear last night that the rock band was not going to show for its scheduled gig at the First Union Center, fans began yelling and cursing, throwing bottles, chairs and ceiling tiles, and overturning trash cans and equipment. Several fights broke out, and paramedics reported transporting five people to area hospitals.
Let’s hope Axl and the guys actually take the Susquehanna Bank Center stage this time when they are supposed to.
