Katy Perry Appointed U.N. Goodwill Ambassador

Perry's job will be to engage young people in UNICEF's work

Katy Perry is doing her part for underprivileged youth as the "Unconditionally" singer was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador at an event Tuesday in New York City.

    Her mission?

Perry will take up the task of engaging young people in UNICEF's work to improve the lives of the globe's most vulnerable children and teenagers. That means empowering them to speak out about the challenges they face including such issues as living in extreme poverty in communities beset by violence, abuse, neglect and war.

"I believe young people have the power to change their own lives, with our help," said the 29-year-old hitmaker. "I am honored to join UNICEF as a Goodwiil Ambassador, and committed to doing everything I can to help children and adolescents who come from such different backgrounds but want the same thing: a brighter future."

Perry's not exactly a newbie when it comes to the organization's good works.

Back in April, the pop superstar took time out of her ever-hectic schedule to pay a visit to poverty-stricken youth in Madagascar, touring a child protection center and meeting with abused and abandoned kids.

On Oct. 11, she contributed her hit, "Roar," to the soundtrack of a new PSA inspiring girls to become tomorrow's champions and increase opportunity for girls' education as part of UNICEF's observance of the second annual International Day of the Girl Child.

More recently, Perry tweeted her more than 48 million followers about UNICEF's efforts to aid child survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

    Now that's influential.

Katie joins a rarified club of celebrities who are UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors including Liam Neeson, Susan Sarandon, Jackie Chan, Mia Farrow, Danny Glover, Orlando Bloom and David Beckham.
