New Measure in New Jersey Will Authorize Electronic Proof of Auto Insurance

New Jersey drivers could use their smart phones to furnish proof of auto insurance under a measure pending in the Legislature.

The state Senate was expected to vote on the bill Thursday.

Under current law, drivers asked to show proof of insurance can offer only a paper copy. But the proposed legislation would permit either electronic or paper forms.

The measure also says that use of an electronic device does not mean the driver has consented to its search.

The Assembly has passed similar legislation already.
