SAN FRANCISCO -- The New York Mets activated outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera from the disabled list in a move manager Terry Collins hopes will provide a much-needed offensive boost for his ball club.
Cespedes had been out since Aug. 4 because of a strained right quad. He was among the team leaders in batting average (.289), home runs (22) and RBIs (59) before getting hurt.
Cabrera, who arrived at AT&T Park on Friday sporting a new blonde hairdo, was sidelined since Aug. 1 with a strained left patella tendon. Cabrera went into the day batting .255 with 13 home runs and 33 RBIs.
The Mets also called up left-handed reliever Josh Smoker from Triple-A Las Vegas. To make room, infielders T.J. Rivera and Ty Kelly and pitcher Josh Edgin were optioned to Las Vegas.
Dodgers: Kershaw works out with team in Cincinnati
CINCINNATI -- Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw missed his teammates so much that he flew from Los Angeles to Cincinnati just to work out with them.
The injured left-hander threw on flat ground Friday before their game against the Reds, the last step before he throws off a mound in the bullpen for the first time in more than a month.
Kershaw has been sidelined since June 26 with a herniated disk.

The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner and 2014 Most Valuable Player is expected to pitch off a mound Saturday for the first time since throwing in a simulated game on July 16. That step followed an aggressive rehab program and aggravated his symptoms, leading to a complete shutdown.
Kershaw, who was 11-2 with a 1.79 ERA when he was injured, is optimistic he'll have better results this time (see full story).
Yankees: Team says RHP Eovaldi's 2nd Tommy John surgery a success
NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees say right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi has had surgery to repair two tears in his elbow.
The Yankees say the surgeries performed Friday on Eovaldi's torn flexor tendon and partially torn ulnar collateral ligament "went as expected."
It was the second Tommy John surgery for the 26-year-old, who had the procedure nine years ago when he was a high school junior.
He is expected to miss the remainder of this season and all of next year. It's a stunning setback for the Yankees, who hoped Eovaldi would be a key cog in their rotation for several seasons when they acquired him from the Miami Marlins in December 2014.
One of the hardest-throwing starters in the majors, Eovaldi was 9-8 with a 4.76 ERA in 124 2/3 innings this year. He can become a free agent after next season.
Dodgers: Activate RHP Bud Norris, LHP Adam Liberatore from DL
CINCINNATI -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have activated right-hander Bud Norris from the 15-day disabled list in time to start Friday night against Cincinnati.
Left-hander Adam Liberatore also came off the 15-day DL. Pitchers Casey Fien and Ross Stripling were optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Norris had been on the disabled list since Aug. 6 with a mid-back strain. He was acquired by the Dodgers from Atlanta in a June 30 trade.
Liberatore had been sidelined since Aug. 3 with left elbow inflammation.
Fien was reinstated from the disabled list on Tuesday and made two scoreless appearances during the Dodgers' series in Philadelphia. Stripling started Thursday's game against the Phillies and left with a no-decision in a 5-4 loss. He is 3-4 with a 4.04 ERA in 15 games, including 11 starts, with the Dodgers this season.
