‘Low expectations' set for Palin

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said Monday that the bar is not being set very high for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in her coming vice presidential debate against Sen. Joe Biden Thursday.

“You know, there's nothing like being able to create low expectations, and that's certainly being done for her,” Romney said during an interview on NBC’s “Today Show.”

Romney, a former GOP presidential candidate, characterized the match up as something of a mismatch.
He called Biden “a veritable wall of words,” while noting that Palin is “not the master of words that Joe Biden is.”

But Romney said the match up may not be all bad for the Alaska governor.

“She's going to come across like an ordinary citizen, but a person of great capacity,” Romney said. “And that’s what John McCain wanted.”

“She's a very confident, well-spoken, thoughtful individual, and I think she's going to do real well.”

The former Republican governor criticized the McCain camp for shielding Palin from the press, saying the campaign should “let Sarah Palin be Sarah Palin.”

“I think if you only have one or two interviews, the focus goes on those, and any mistake is going to be amplified dramatically,” Romney said.

“So let her get out there and be herself, and I think people will say, ‘You know what? I like what I see. She's a person who understands the needs of the American people.’”
