Philly Mayor Jim Kenney Announces Picks for Fire, Prisons Commissioners

A Virginia public safety official has been tapped to become Philadelphia's new fire commissioner.

Mayor Jim Kenney announced Tuesday the appointment of Adam Thiel to the post. Thiel served as deputy secretary of public safety and homeland security for the commonwealth of Virginia.

Before that, Thiel was fire chief of Alexandria, Virginia and officials said he has also served in fire and emergency service organizations in Maryland, North Carolina and Arizona.

The mayor also announce Blanche Carney as the city's prisons commissioner. She has been deputy commissioner since January 2015 and has been with the Philadelphia prison system since 1995.
