Christie Defends His Cowboys Fandom After Twitter Backlash

Gov. Christie is defending his longtime love for the Dallas Cowboys after his cheering for the team -- in a box with owner Jerry Jones -- sparked a social media firestorm.

Christie was spotted high-fiving Jones in a luxury box Sunday night at the Philadelphia Eagles-Cowboys game.

The interactions prompted a wave of hate on Twitter from angry Eagles fans, who apparently were unaware the governor has long been a Cowboys fan despite his New Jersey roots, and longtime Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Kenney, a Democrat who blasted Christie in a not-so-subtle-insult-laced tirade on his personal account.

Christie responded to the meltdown Monday morning with an unscheduled appearance on WPG Talk Radio 1450.

He told listeners he's never made a secret of his Cowboys fandom and said he would never change his team loyalties to score political points.

Later in the day, he said during his monthly "Ask the Governor" radio show on New Jersey 101.5 FM that even President Barack Obama razzed him about his football allegiances as the two attended an event at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

"He teased me a little about that and we had some good time there," Christie said.

He also took to Twitter to respond to some of the kinder commenters.
