Grocery Store Shooting Suspect Had Theft Conviction

Shawn Walter Bair pleaded guilty to January 2010 theft charge, records show

The northern Indiana man who police said shot and killed two women in a supermarket was convicted four years ago of stealing from another store in the same supermarket chain.

Court records show 22-year-old Shawn Walter Bair of Elkhart was charged with theft in January 2010 for stealing from another Martin's Super Market store in the city.

Bair was sentenced to six months after pleading guilty to theft and ordered to pay $6 in restitution.

Bair entered a Martin's Super Market in Elkhart late Wednesday and fatally shot a 20-year-old store employee and a 44-year-old shopper, officials said.

The suspected gunman was killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers from the Elkhart Police Department just after 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Surveillance cameras in the store showed about 12 to 15 people in the store at the time of the shooting.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as the Indiana State Police Department and the Elkhart Police Department were investigating the shooting.
