Wilmington Day of Service Honors Fallen Firefighters

The community hosted service events Saturday including a blood drive and food drive.

Wilmington residents have participated in a day of service and other events to honor the memory of three fallen firefighters killed by a blaze a year ago that authorities say was intentionally set.

The community hosted service events Saturday including a blood drive and food drive. On Sunday, the one-year anniversary of the deadly fire, friends, family, and firefighters attended a memorial mass.

Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes died at the scene of the Sept. 24 row house fire after the first floor of the home collapsed. Senior Firefighter Ardythe Hope was critically injured and died several weeks later.

The woman accused of setting the fire has pleaded not guilty to more than a dozen charges, including arson and murder.
