Teen Locked in Police Van Overnight Sues NJ Town

One of the five teenagers allegedly left locked for hours in a police van in North Jersey last year has filed a federal civil rights suit against Fort Lee, its police department and several officers.

Adam Kim seeks undisclosed compensatory and punitive damages in the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Newark. He alleges Fort Lee officers falsely arrested and unlawfully detained him, and that borough officials failed to implement appropriate policies and were negligent.

Borough officials told The Record they would not comment on the suit.

Kim was among several youths rounded up in March 2011 after a loud house party. The van was parked at police headquarters and the teens said they were β€œstranded” for more than 14 hours with no food, water, toilets or cell phones.
