As she stepped up to the stage after being named "Entertainer of the Year" at the Academy of Country Music Awards for the second year in a row, Taylor Swift gave a shout out to her date who couldn't make it on Sunday night.
"My date tonight was supposed to be a high school football player named Kevin McGuire and he is not here. But I promised him I'd give him a shout out. So Kevin and all your family and friends, thank you for wanting to take me to the ACMs," Swift said on stage.
Kevin McGuire, a senior at Sterling High School in Somerdale, was invited to the Academy of Country Music Awards by Swift back in February. McGuire, who is battling Leukemia, originally asked Swift if she could go to his prom with him on June 1, which happens to be the same day as his birthday. He gained support through a massive Facebook page created by his sister which features tens of thousands of people.
Swift responded to McGuire through her own Facebook fan page, informing the teen that she could not make it to his prom. To make up for it however, Swift invited Taylor to the ACM Awards which the teen eagerly accepted.
On Saturday however, Kevin McGuire’s fan facebook page wrote the following status:
Hi everyone, I am so sorry to announce this devastating news, but Kevin was admitted to the hospital last night, and is unable to attend the Academy of Country Music Awards with Taylor Swift. As we should all live by the moto “live for today” a cancer patient feels the impact of these words far to hard. We appreciate everything you have done for us, and we know you are all hurt from this too. Please continue to pray for Kevin and his health, because that is the most important thing. As for Taylor, she is just as depressed as all of us to miss out on this date, and we are so thankful for the opportunity she has given us.
McGuire was first diagnosed with Leukemia at 13 and believed he beat the disease two years ago. He recently learned however his cancer had returned. He is currently being treated at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Swift responded to the news on her twitter account.
"Just talked to Kevin McGuire," tweeted Swift. "He's not well enough to join me at the ACMs. Please keep him in your thoughts. I'll make it up to you, Kevin!"
