Suspected Drunk Driver Hits Police Wagon in West Philadelphia, Injures 3 Officers

A crash involving a driver suspected of driving under the influence sent three Philadelphia Police officers to the hospital Sunday morning.

Police said the ordeal unfolded when a Lincoln Navigator driven by a 58-year-old man suspected to be drunk was driving south on 52nd Street near Chestnut, in West Philadelphia, about 4:30 a.m. and crashed into an 18th District patrol wagon that two police officers were sitting inside.

The crash caused a chain reaction, and the patrol wagon slammed into a patrol car parked nearby, police said. The two officers who were in the wagon and one who was in the patrol car were all taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police said the man driving the Navigator was taken to the hospital to be checked out when he complained of pain after the crash. They did not release his identity Sunday, but said he will face charges of DUI and related offenses.
