SEPTA plans to spend nearly $154 million for 18 new commuter locomotives in the authority's biggest railroad purchase in a decade.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority's board was expected to approve the purchase Thursday. The locomotives are expected to be delivered in 2018. The price includes an option for five more commuter engines.
The electric locomotives would replace eight aging engines and add capacity to other regional rail lines.
The purchase is part of SEPTA's increased spending on new vehicles and major construction. It plans to spend $535 million next fiscal year to buy new vehicles, replace and repair rail bridges, upgrade stations and begin overhauling a downtown Philadelphia subway concourse.
