Northeast Philadelphia Hotel Where Couple Died by Suicide Donates to Funerals

The Roosevelt Inn is donating $1,000 to each of the women's funerals after the couple died there by suicide earlier this month.

A Philadelphia hotel where a couple died by suicide together earlier this month is donating money for the women's funerals.

Kristina Ruth Reed, 33, and Mary Elizabeth Bettino, 39, checked in to the Roosevelt Inn, on Roosevelt Boulevard near Napfle Street in the Northeast, on July 16. The next morning, hotel staff found both women, who were longtime partners, dead in their second-floor room.

Reed and Bettino's official causes of death have not been released, but Reed's sister, Cindy Thomas, said the women were found with several empty drug containers and with plastic bags covering their heads. Thomas said Reed battled depression and addiction for much of her life.

The owners of the Roosevelt Inn, which has been in Philadelphia for several decades, are donating $1,000 toward each of the women's funerals after the tragedy, hotel manager Y. Patel told NBC10 on Monday.

Reed's family asked that, in lieu of flowers, people make donations to local suicide-prevention and addiction services organizations in her name.

"I just want to raise awareness about mental health and suicide," Thomas told NBC10 last week. "This stuff kills."
