Flooding Causes Mandatory Evacuation for Residents of Wilkes-Barre

Officials ordered mandatory evacuations for Wilkes-Barre residents

The rising waters of a rain-swollen creek have forced the evacuation of residents in the northeastern Pennsylvania city of Wilkes-Barre.

Officials ordered the mandatory evacuation of about 3,000 residents early Wednesday because of flooding on the Solomon Creek.

The Red Cross set up a temporary shelter at a nearby high school.

Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom Leighton told The Citizens' Voice he hopes the evacuation would be temporary, but it is for the safety of residents.

Rain from what had been Hurricane Irene also prompted evacuations two Sundays ago.

The National Weather Service says 1 to 2 inches of rain fell on the area overnight from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee.

Flood warnings are also in effect in much of the rest of the state.
