Police Officer Steals $20,000

Authorities say a Sayreville police officer has admitted stealing more than $20,000 in rent paid by the town's housing authority.

Fifty-one-year-old Stephen Gulick pleaded guilty to theft by deception.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office says Gulick collected federal money to subsidize rent paid by a female tenant at a property he owned. Gulick later married the woman, but continued to cash the checks even though she was no longer eligible for aid.

Under terms of a plea agreement, Gulick will be required to resign from the police force and repay the money. Prosecutors will seek probation for up to five years for the officer.
