Officer Arrested for Shoplifting

An area police officer is accused of stealing hundreds of dollars worth of groceries.

A veteran police corporal in eastern Pennsylvania has been suspended while facing charges he shoplifted from a grocery store last month.

The Reading Eagle reports township officials say 35-year-old Amity Township police Cpl. Glenn J. Oesterling is suspended indefinitely without pay.

Oesterling faces retail theft, stolen property and related charges for alleged thefts from a GIANT Food store in West Pottsgrove Township on June 12 and June 18. Investigators say Oesterling had three young children with him during at least one of the incidents.

Officials allege that in the first case Oesterling placed $38 worth of merchandise into reusable shopping bags in his cart and walked out of the store. The next time, police say he left with $300 worth of merchandise before being stopped.

His attorney, Adam Sager, says Oesterling looks forward to clearing his name.

Oesterling is due in court for a preliminary hearing later this month, according to court records.
