Twin Baby Girls Die After Being Found Unresponsive Inside NJ Apartment

Investigators say two baby girls, both 7-months-old, were found unresponsive inside.

An investigation is underway in the deaths of twin babies initially found unresponsive in a New Jersey apartment.

Police responded to the Pines Apartment complex on the 500 block of Bilper Avenue in Lindenwold, New Jersey Wednesday morning.

Investigators say two baby girls, both 7-months-old, were found unresponsive inside. A source told NBC10 that the babies were later pronounced dead.

In a 9-1-1 call, the mother of the children explained to police her babies went to sleep at 6:30 a.m. and by 8 a.m. she noticed they were not breathing and they remained unresponsive after she performed CPR for 15 minutes. She also referenced her son who is between the ages of 6 and 7.

A neighbor, Ebony Bell, told NBC10 a woman who she believes is the mother of the children exited the home appearing distraught and their grandmother was kept from entering.

"She was screaming," Bell said. "Like she was crying really bad. And they put her in the back of a cop car and I saw them bring out bags. You know, body bags and stuff."

Investigators spent several hours inside the apartment taking photographs and collecting evidence. They have not revealed any details regarding the circumstances of the babies' deaths.

Alice Shields, who lives near the apartment, told NBC10 she knows the family. Shields said aside from the mother and the twin baby girls, a grandmother and at least one other child lived in the apartment. She didn't hear anything out of the ordinary until police arrived Wednesday morning. She last spoke with the mother on Monday.

"She had the kids with her in their car seats and she had them out to the car," Shields said. "And I talked to her. She said, 'Well I'm just gonna go pick up my son now.'"

Police continue to investigate.
