Pharmacist Sentenced for Selling Painkillers

A former pharmacist-in-charge of a northern New Jersey pharmacy is going to prison for his role in a decade-long, $1.5 million health care fraud scheme involving twin brothers who owned the business.

A federal judge on Thursday sentenced 49-year-old Leonard "Lenny'' Stefanelli of East Hanover to 37 months in prison.

Stefanelli pleaded guilty to illegally dispensing oxycodone on six separate occasions in 2012 in exchange for thousands of dollars in cash.

Stefanelli agreed to forfeit $1.5 million.

Stefanelli also admitted to conspiring with twin brothers Robert and William Carlucci of Florham Park to submit fraudulent bills to health care benefit providers. The brothers previously owned the West Orange Pharmacy.

The Carlucci brothers pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health fraud and were each sentenced to 42 months in prison.
