Man Dies After Getting Trapped Under El Train in West Philadelphia

Service on SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line was disrupted Tuesday morning after a man jumped onto the tracks and was killed by a train, officials said.

Fire officials said the incident happened shortly before noon, and that rescuers responded to the scene, at 56th and Market streets, at 11:48 a.m. The 58-year-old man was trapped underneath the train and pronounced dead there at 12:05 p.m.

Police said the incident was a suicide and that the man jumped in front of the train as it was pulling out of the station.

Service on the Market-Frankford El line was suspended between 52nd Street and 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby as investigators worked at the scene, officials said. Shuttle buses were running between the two points until further notice.
