Pa. Bishop Gives Audit to District Attorney

A Roman Catholic church official in northwestern Pennsylvania says he has given information about a financially troubled religious school to the district attorney.

Erie Bishop Lawrence Persico announced the news about St. Peter Cathedral School over the weekend.

Persico hired a firm in March to audit the school and its parish after the Internal Revenue Service lodged a lien for more than $300,000 in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties.

Persico says he was surprised to learn from the five-month financial probe that the parish carries about half a million dollars in debt.

In a statement, the bishop says he can't discuss further details of the case until prosecutors decide whether to file charges.
