Once-Troubled Tropicana Gets New 1-Year License

Filthy AC casino that was infested with roaches and bedbugs gets second chance

New Jersey casino regulators have issued a new one-year license to the Tropicana Casino and Resort, capping a big turnaround for a property that was stripped of its license just three years ago.

The state Casino Control Commission found that the Tropicana, which is now owned by billionaire investor Carl Icahn, has improved.

In December 2007, the Trop was stripped of its license due to massive job cuts that former owners made that left the casino dirty and understaffed.

Despite a slump caused by the poor economy and competition from neighboring states, the Tropicana is holding its own.

Bob McDevitt, the head of a union and one of the harshest critics of former Tropicana management, says it's a much cleaner, better place to work now.
