New Jersey Man Charged After Choking Out Mother

UPDATE: Marcilo Gacutan was acquitted of manslaughter.

A southern New Jersey man who allegedly attacked his mother last year has been indicted on aggravated manslaughter charges.

Burlington County prosecutors announced Thursday that 46-year-old Marcilo Gacutan, of Mount Laurel, allegedly threw his mother to the ground and choked her in Oct. 2014 after an argument. The attack allegedly caused injuries that would later lead to her death.

Authorities said 66-year-old Shirley Gacutan had initially refused treatment at the scene, but underwent surgery for a brain hemorrhage after complaining of head pain.

She entered a coma following the surgery and died in November.

Marcilio Gacutan was charged with simple assault after the Oct. attack, but the charges were upgraded to aggravated assault after his mother's surgery.

He remains jailed on $250,000 bail.
