NJ Man Uses Hot Check for 484K Home: Prosecutor

The man attempted to use the counterfeit check to close on a house, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

A Moorestown man was indicted for using a counterfeit bank check in the amount of 484K, according to a release from the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

Authorities say Brett Cooper, 35, attempted to use the check while closing on a Moorestown house that he planned to purchase.

Prosecutors say Cooper gave the bad check to the title insurance company at closing. The title company later found out it was counterfeit when the bank notified them Cooper's account had insufficient funds. The account actually had no money at all in it, prosecutors said.

Cooper was indicted on one count of Theft by Deception, one count of Elements of Computer Theft, two counts of Forgery, and one count of Uttering a Forged Instrument.

An arraignment date has not been set.
