McNeil Laying Off 300 Employees From Montco Plant

Plant has been shut down since early May after product recall

Consumer pharmaceutical giant McNeil announced they would be letting go three-fourths of the workforce from their Fort Washington site.

Three hundred of the company's 400 staffers were given notice Thursday afternoon that they would no longer have a job.

A division of Johnson & Johnson, McNeil Consumer makes some of the most popular over-the-counter medicines like Tylenol, Imodium and Motrin.

The company shut down medicine manufacturing at the Fort Washington plant along Camp Hill Road in May following a major recall of Children's Tylenol.

The 136 million bottles child's pain reliever were voluntarily recalled by McNeil after metallic flakes were found in the medicine. Fortunately, there've been no reports of injuries from the recall.

The find also prompted the recall of PediaCare, which was made at the plant for another company, and the shutdown affected the production of other medicines.

The recall was recently extended and McNeil said it expects to keep the plant out of operation until the end of the year. Officials say major upgrades will be made to the facility to ensure quality control can be kept.

Employees who received a pink slip will continue to collect salaries and benefits until September when they will be offered severance packages, according to the company.
