Man Must Stand Trial on Murder Charges

A man accused of fatally stabbing his nephew during a domestic dispute at a southern New Jersey apartment complex two years ago will have to stand trial on murder charges. The ruling came Monday after lawyers for 47-year-old Chad Gatewood of Deptford tried to get his indictment dismissed.

They claimed the Gloucester County grand jury that indicted Gatewood last June should have been told his nephew, 20-year-old Elijah Gatewood-Gabriel, also had a knife and was high on cocaine when the attack occurred in May 2012 at the Inverness Apartments.

They claimed Gatewood may have been defending himself while the pair argued inside their unit, where they lived with the victim's mother.

But Gloucester County prosecutors argued there was "no indication'' Gatewood was threatened or that his nephew used his knife.
