What's Inside Mysterious City Hall Safes?

Two mysterious safes discovered in a wall of the Jersey City mayor's office will be opened this week.

The Jersey Journal reports locksmiths will be at city hall on Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Steve Fulup has said he has no idea what the safes may have been used for, or whether anything might be inside. City officials think they have been around for generations and not opened for many years.

β€œWe don’t know when the safes were installed or what they were used for, but they are quite old and we thought it would be interesting to find out what may be inside,” Fulup told the paper.

Mayors who have served over the past 30 years have said they don't have any answers about them.

But one bit of lore is that they may have been used to store kickbacks from city workers to Mayor Frank Hague, who ran the city from 1917 to 1947.
