The city of Philadelphia will soon learn whether it's getting a second casino.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is scheduled to meet in the city on Tuesday. Gambling regulators will decide among four applicants for Philadelphia's second and final casino license. They also have the option of withholding the license.
Pennsylvania's southeastern corner already has four casinos. Two of them, SugarHouse in Philadelphia and Harrah's Philadelphia in suburban Chester, want the board to withhold the license, saying the region's casino market is already saturated. The applicants say there is room for one more.
The state uses a little more than half the money collected in casino taxes for statewide property tax reduction and to reduce Philadelphia wage taxes. The money also supports state and local governments and the horse-racing industry.
South Philly residents oppose the casino and held a protest against it. Many fear a new casino could bring economics problems similar to those in Atlantic City.
