Some New Jersey college towns are seeking new student fees to help defray the cost of police, fire and other services to the tax-exempt schools.
Wayne, Mahwah, Little Falls, Teaneck, Clifton and Montclair are among the towns that have passed a resolution asking the Legislature to back the idea, citing the tough economic times.
They want lawmakers to pass a bill charging all colleges and universities $100 per full-time student and $50 per part-time student. The money would go to the towns that house the schools, allowing municipalities to offset some of their operating expenses that are now provided for free.
Those opposed to the idea say paying tuition is hard enough.
And they note many students are the children of taxpayers who help foot the bills.
