A tractor-trailer carrying between 4,500 to 5,500 live chickens overturned on a Berks County highway Monday morning, spilling its feathered cargo all over the road.

The chicken truck lost control and landed on its side on the ramp from state Route 12 to U.S. Route 422 East in Wyomissing at about 11 a.m., according to Wyomissing police.

No humans were injured in the accident, but there were many chicken fatalities, said police.

Police did not know where the chickens were being transported to or from, and the ramp remained closed two hours later as police continued to round up the live poultry.
