Bus Carrying PSU Spring Breakers Catches Fire

The bus caught fire on the highway, but no one was injured.

Officials say a charter bus taking Penn State students back to campus after spring break caught fire on Interstate 70, but no one was hurt.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. Sunday near Breezewood and the bus was safely evacuated. Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers says it was one of three buses bringing students from Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., back to the University Park campus after spring break.

Powers says the bus was sponsored by the Washington DC Alumni Association.

She says students smelled smoke on the bus and the driver pulled over and the students evacuated. Much of the luggage was removed before the fire spread, but some left onboard was damaged when the vehicle was later engulfed in flames.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known.
