Teen Identified in Drowning

The coroner has identified a 17-year-old boy who drowned in Presque Isle Bay near Erie, but police aren't sure if his death is connected to the rescue of two other teens who had to be rescued from a jetty last week.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook tells the Erie Times-News that the body recovered from the bay on Saturday is that of 17-year-old Prem Thapa, a Bhutanese boy who had been living in Erie.

Cook has ruled Thapa's death an accidental drowning and says the boy likely died Thursday afternoon, though authorities still don't know how or why he entered the water.

Erie police are trying to determine whether the boy's death is related to the Thursday rescue of two teens who swam out to a stone jetty and couldn't swim back to shore.
