One of the area’s favorite festivals won’t be returning this summer.

South Jersey's Appel Farm has put its arts and music festival on hiatus for this year as the group rethinks its mission.

The daylong festival in Salem County has been held nearly annually since 1988.

Appel Farm Arts & Music Center stumbled after entering a deal to manage the Landis Theater in Vineland in 2012. The group says the city of Vineland did not pay operating costs that it was supposed to. The agreement ended in September and the theater is now out of business.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that in the aftermath of that and with a search on for a new executive director, trustees have decided to skip this year's festival.

Appel Farm is continuing its summer camp and arts outreach program.
