Surveillance video shows two shooting suspects walking away calmly from a shooting scene in Southwest Philadelphia. Police say the suspects fired 38 shots, sending people ducking for cover. It happened within a mile of several schools. NBC10's Nefertiti Jaquez reports. (Published Wednesday, Apr 10, 2013)

It was another hot day in Philadelphia, and unfortunately, more gunshots rang out, this time in an area where local children were at schools.

A man is fighting for his life while a teen boy is recovering after gunmen opened fire about a block away from a school in the Elmwood section of the city.

Investigators say Robert Adams, 24, had just left a corner store and was walking along 2500 South Millick Street around 2:45 p.m. when two men began to follow him. Police say the men then opened fire at Adams, striking him three times in the stomach. A 17-year-old boy who was walking home at the time was also struck in the arm.

As the shooting took place, police say Adams ran into a nearby daycare center on the 6100 block of Elmwood Avenue to duck for cover as the gunmen fled the scene.

In all, police say, the gunmen fired 38 shots. The back windshields of two cars were also blown out during the shooting. A woman who lives on South Millick, who did not want to be identified, says she saw the bullet cases outside of her home.

"They made me walk on the other side of the street because we had to walk around the bullets," she said.

Both men were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Adams is in critical condition while the teen was released from the hospital. Investigators believe the men targeted Adams while the teen was an innocent bystander. Adams has a criminal record, according to investigators.

The shooting occurred about .2 miles away from Morton Thomas G School. None of the children were hurt during the incident.

Aside from Morton, the following schools are within a mile radius of the shooting:

    • John Bartram High School
    • Richard Allen Preparatory Charter School
    • Tilden Middle School
    • Hardy Williams Charter School
    • Phila. Elwyn Institute
    • Mitchell Elementary School
    • Catharine Elementary School
    • Patterson John M School
    • Shaw Anna H Middle School

The shooting comes a day after a violent night in Philly in which two people were killed and six injured in five shooting incidents.

Police are currently viewing surveillance video of the two suspects. If you have any information on this incident, please call Philadelphia Police.
