We need to remember these images BEFORE we support military actions. Soldiers hold up their end of the deal, they go where they are told; we gotta be more careful in what we ask.

My older brother was born while my dad was in the Korean "not" war. My youngest sister didn't know my dad when he came home from Korea his 2nd time there, 8 years later. She wouldn't go to him when we picked him up that welcome home day, and when we got home, she wiggled down, and ran to his picture that we kissed every night at bedtime, and said "That's my Daddy!". We children howled with laughter, my Dad almost cried. Of course, as I got older, I understood his sadness. My little sister quickly learned to hug our Dad. When my Dad was in Vietnam, years later, it was no easier. as a teen, I still needed my Daddy.
This adorable picture reminded me of what we felt every time our Daddy had to be gone, whether he was gone 13 months, or just 2 weeks for special field training, being separated from your parent is hard. it's do-able, but hard. I went back to my old HS, Fort Campbell, a few years ago, and was saddened by the massive number of ribbons on their lockers, 1 or 2, depending on how many parents were deployed. I was also very happy they were allowed to stay on post, because military post schools are awesome for Army brats because you aren't alone, other kids, teachers, parents, understand what you are going through! The parent or grandparents at home with the kids have such responsibilities and I think my Mom deserves an award, as do all the others! I pray for all the families and military away and here. You have special lives, and I'm proud of mine! Our FCHS reunion stories always say that! You soldiers and parents are our heros! If your child can go to school with other military kids, let them. They talk to each other and understand each other! I pray for you and your families! As for this little girl - she represents many other children, past and present and it's a great photo! During my husband's last deployment I had found a blog that was put together by a soldier who was at the same FOB as he was, (they were not in the same company...they didn't know each other and never ever did meet), but he posted things daily about the amenities of the camp, people asked him if he could find out things about the company their loved one was in such as when they may be expected to ship out, people asked him to try to send a hello to their loved one from them. It was a great comfort to feel connected in some little way. I did not live near post and was not married to my husband at the time so there was no support system for me....except this wonderful blog. I encourage you to look for something similar by searching the name of the camp or "FOB" where your loved one is. All those defending the soldiers are free to do so, but need to take into consideration that they are only supporting them, and not truly helping them. In other countries, you wouldn't see this. It's a sign of weakness.

Being a first mom is scary enough, saying goodbye to your husband..well terrifying. I remember holding on to any part of him I could, but that last hug goodbye for a year is something that just hurts so much and I can't imagine being a little girl having to say goodbye to my Daddy for a year, because it was hard enough as a grown-up. This picture really touched my heart, because there is the soldier, and then the family who stands beside the soldier and this is a picture that says it all; one that doesn't even needs words. The allowed the family to wait with them at the hangar on the Air Force base on deployment day. Of course I took the box of Kleenex and although I was trying to keep myself together for both my kids and my husband I was a total wreck and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't keep the tears away. The kids were glued to his side the entire time we were there of course. When they announced that the families only had 5 minutes left before we had to leave and I broke. I just stood there in his arms sobbing. My oldest was clinging to his leg and sobbing herself. She is just old enough that she understands what is going on enough to know it is dangerous. She looked up at him with tear filled eyes and said "John please come home, don't let the bad guys blow you up". I was devestated. I didn't and still don't know what to tell her to put her mind at ease. The baby was only 18 months at the time and I thought she was dealing quite well. That is until he walked up to the area they had roped off...they couldn't walk us out because they weren't allowed to go past that rope. By the time we got there they gave the 2 minute warning. I gave him the last kiss we would be able to share for a long time and the kids gave their hugs and kisses. That's when I knew that the baby was handling it as well as I thought. She just clinged to him with all her might and refused to let go. I had to pry my poor baby off of her daddy and she was just heart broken. He stood by that rope and watched us walk out. The entire my baby was reaching for her daddy as hard as she can and just screaming her poor little lungs out because she couldn't understand why daddy had to leave us and why he couldn't come home with us. I know what the mother of this poor little girl must have been feeling and my heart goes out to the entire family. This is a hardship that many people in this country will never know. When learning of this story and seeing this photo I felt extremely proud. Proud of that father for having the devotion to fulfill his duty to all of us, regardless of popular or personal beliefs. Proud of that family for having the courage and the strength to stand up each and everyday and carry on, being a man down. Mostly I was proud of that little girl for having the fortitude at such a young age to stand shoulder to shoulder with her father and his comrades showing us all that it is not only the men and women in uniform that serve, but the mother's, father's, husband's, wife's and children that shoulder the burden of freedom and our security.
There are those reading this who may be laughing. I am not mad at you, I just think you have forgotten those who have afforded you the right to voice that opinion openly without retribution. So remember this, there one day may be a reason you believe is worthy of our men and women being put in harms way and without regard to their own beliefs and whether or not they agree, they will leave their families and homes, and they will go. This is a fact that I am not furious, intrigued, sad, bored, thrilled or laughing about. I am proud!
So the next time you laugh at this family or any other military family, when you're done, turn around and say thank you for sacrificing so much so that I may have that right.
