While internet addiction is not an official disorder as categorized by the American Psychiatric Association, compulsive use of the internet and other digital technologies can be disruptive to leading a healthy life.

Beating Addiction is a new social networking site for people suffering from addiction. Their mission is “to be the leading online social-networking site [to] helps users overcome their addiction(s), mainly, by talking and communicating with others.”

As far as the effectiveness of the site, the jury is still out. The site is in beta and some of the sections and features (like FAQs and the Recovery and Affiliate Programs) are not available yet. Additionally, the membership base is growing, so the number of groups and users is still small.

Ironically, one of the addictions BeatingAddiction tackles is Facebook. (You know the types… maybe you’re one of them?) Or maybe you don’t want to face the facts. Think you might be addicted to the net? Take a questionnaire to find out.

We think the folks at Mashable have it right when they suggest fighting on the addicts’ own turf by launching a Facebook app instead.
