Water Gushes From Main Break

Officials say 10-inch main broke on Rising Sun Avenue

A 10-inch water main broke this morning sending water onto Rising Sun Avenue and leaving an apartment building and businesses without water service in the Lawncrest section of Northeast Philadelphia.

Water began gushing from a hole on the 6700 block of Rising Sun Avenue around 5:20 a.m.

Rising Sun was closed from Knorr Street to Martins Mills Road throughout the morning.

SkyForce10 hovered over the scene as Philadelphia Police and Philadelphia Water Department crews arrived on the scene. Water could be seen pouring from a manhole in the middle of the block.

With the road closed, drivers were diverted to parallel streets like Bingham and Oakley Streets, according to NBC10's Jillian Mele.

Multiple businesses as well as an apartment building were without water while crews worked to fix the break, officials said.

Water Department spokeswoman Laura Copeland said crews had to shut down the water and that repairs would begin later in the day.

There are no reports of property damage, Copeland said.
