Possible DUI Crash Kills 1 in Port Richmond

Alleged drunk driver rear ends another car, killing the driver, cops say

One person is dead and two others hospitalized after an apparent drunk driving crash in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia late Tuesday night.

An alleged drunk driver going northbound on Richmond Street rear-ended what appeared to be a van near the intersection of E Schiller Street before 11 p.m., Philadelphia Police said.

The impact of the violent crash caused the rear-ended vehicle to roll down the street and crash into a utility pole.

The driver, Venustiano Vidaos Gonzaga, was ejected from the vehicle. The 50-year-old who hailed from Camden, N.J.  was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.

A passenger in Gonzaga's car who is a quadripelegic was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, cops said.

The driver of the car that allegedly caused the accident was also ejected from his car as it careened into a nearby utility pole -- nearly cracking the pole in half. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Police are investigating the wreck as a possible DUI and charges are pending, they said.

As of early Wednesday morning no names were released.
