A Philippines film and television heartthrob saved his co-star from deadly flood waters after hearing her rooftop plea for help on the news, while at least 240 people have perished from the worst flooding to hit the country in 40 years.

Actor Richard Gutierrez borrowed an army speedboat to rescue Christine Reyes, her mother and two young children, The Associated Press reported.

Meanwhile, authorities have rescued more than 7,900 people from Saturday’s Tropical Storm Ketsana and 374,890 now live in shelters after their homes were destroyed in the disaster, according to the BBC. About 1.9 million people had their homes flooded.

The government is asking for international help even as two new storms threaten to rock the island nation as early as Friday.
