SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres have traded pitcher James Shields and cash to the Chicago White Sox for pitcher Erik Johnson and shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.
The deal was made Saturday. It came three days after Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler criticized the team's recent performances as being "embarrassing" and "pathetic," and called out Shields for his poor start Tuesday at Seattle.
Shields was one of several big-name players the Padres brought in before the 2015 season, giving him a $75 million, four-year deal. The roster overhaul fizzled, as the Padres finished three games worse last year than they did in 2014.
The 34-year-old Shields is 2-7 with a 4.28 ERA. He allowed 10 runs in 2 2-3 innings in a 16-4 loss at Seattle on Tuesday.
Tatis is the son of former big leaguer Fernando Tatis.

Manager Joe Girardi said Teixeira's knee "locked up" on him. The injury has been diagnosed as a right knee articular cartilage tear, and the veteran was placed on the DL Saturday.
It's been a tough season for Teixeira, who's batting .180 with three homers and 12 RBIs. He was mired in a 1-for-18 slump through Friday.
Last year, he hit 31 homers, drove in 79 runs and earned a berth in the All-Star Game for the third time.
The Yankees filled out the 25-man roster by selecting the contract of infielder Chris Parmelee from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Utility man Dustin Ackley, who has a dislocated right shoulder, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Royals: 2015 World Series MVP Salvador Perez returns to lineup
CLEVELAND -- Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez has returned to the lineup after missing six games with a bruised left thigh.
Perez, the Most Valuable Player in last year's World Series when the Royals defeated the New York Mets, is batting fifth Saturday against the Cleveland Indians. He was injured in a collision with third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert while chasing a foul popup May 28.
Perez, a three-time All-Star, is batting .277 with seven homers and 25 RBIs in 46 games for the Royals, who lead the AL Central despite dealing with injuries to several key players.
Third baseman Mike Moustakas will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and left fielder Alex Gordon is on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right wrist.
Marlins: Ali family isn't unhappy about premature tribute
MIAMI -- Miami Marlins president David Samson says the family of Muhammad Ali isn't unhappy about the team's premature tribute to the late heavyweight champion.
The Marlins displayed a photo of Ali on their video board Friday night indicating the heavyweight champion had died, but it was more than two hours later before Ali's family announced his death in Phoenix.
Samson said Saturday that the premature tribute, which took place moments after Miami's game against the New York Mets ended, came after he confirmed Ali's death with someone close to the boxer. Samson was unaware the death had yet to be made public.
Fans at the Marlins-Mets game Saturday observed a moment of silence for Ali while the video board displayed a photo of the triumphant champion.
