Dodgers 6, Phillies 3: Jake Arrieta Allows 3 of L.A.'s 4 Home Runs in Series-opening Loss

BOX SCORE

LOS ANGELES - The Phillies were no match for the powerful Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

The Dodgers, on the strength of three homers against Phillies starter Jake Arrieta, scored a 6-3 win at Dodger Stadium. The sellout crowd of 54,307 was the largest for a regular season game at Dodger Stadium since 2012.

The loss was the Phillies' second straight, dropping them to 33-24. They lead the NL East.

The NL West-leading Dodgers are 39-19 and 23-7 at home.

The keys

β€’ Arrieta had a difficult time keeping the ball in the yard. He gave up three homers, including two in the bottom of the fifth. The Dodgers' three-run rally in the fifth came moments after Arrieta had tied the game at 2-2 with a single.

β€’ Dodgers' pitching held the Phillies to just five hits and three were singles. Two of the Phillies' hits came in the ninth inning.

β€’ The Dodgers clubbed 12 hits. Four were homers.

Arrieta's night

The right-hander did not trick the Dodger hitters. He gave up 10 hits and five runs over five innings. All five of the Dodgers' runs scored on homers.

All three of the homers that Arrieta gave up came against lefty hitters. Lefty hitters entered the game with an .865 OPS against Arrieta. Righty hitters had a .598 OPS. The first six hitters in the Dodgers' lineup were lefty hitters.

Arrieta had pitched well in his previous two starts, giving up just three runs in 14 innings.

He is 5-5 with a 3.96 ERA.

Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda gave up three hits and two runs over six walk-free innings.

Transaction

Zach Eflin went on the injured list with a minor back issue. He does not expect to be out long (see story).

Up next

The Phillies will face three-time NL Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw on Saturday night. Kershaw is 5-0 with a 3.46 ERA. The Phillies have not officially named a starter. Lefty Cole Irvin could get the nod.
