Flyers-Red Wings 5 Things: How Long Can the Streak Last?

Flyers (17-10-3) at Red Wings (13-12-3)
5 p.m. on CSN, CSNPhilly.com and the NBC Sports App.

The Flyers stretched their winning streak to eight games with a 4-2 win over the Stars on Saturday.

The orange and black don't have much time to celebrate with a game in Detroit Sunday night.

Here are five things to watch ahead of the Flyers' quest for nine straight.

1. How long can it/Mason last?
There have been quite a few moments where it appeared the Flyers' winning streak would end. In the past week alone, they overcame two two-goals deficits to beat the Oilers on Thursday, and after falling behind 2-1 with 10:32 left in the third period against the Stars, Brayden Schenn completed the hat-trick, potting the tying goal and then game-winner with 2:15 left in a 4-2 win.

The eight-game winning streak is tied for the longest in the NHL this season and is the longest for the Flyers since 2002. If the Flyers win Sunday, it'll be their first nine-game streak since April 2-22, 1995.

It'll be interesting to see how head coach Dave Hakstol handles Steve Mason, who bounced back after giving up five goals against Edmonton. Mason is on a personal-best seven-game win streak, compiling a .931 save percentage during that stretch. He's also started 13 of the last 14.

2. The stars are out
Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek catch flack for not always playing at a "superstar level." The current streak is proof that with a solid supporting cast, the Flyers' dynamic duo are among the best in the NHL.

The Flyers' captain has recorded five goals and six assists in his last eight games. His assist on Voracek's empty-netter was his 20th of the season, tying him for second in the league. Giroux's 29 points are tied for fourth-best in the NHL.

There may not be a hotter player in the league than Voracek right now. He's recorded four points in consecutive games. He's the first Flyer to do that since some guy named Eric Lindros. In the last eight games, he has four goals and 11 assists. His recent run has propelled him to second on the NHL's scoring list behind only Edmonton's Connor McDavid.

3. Hey Joe
Sunday will be the last game for the Flyers at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. In 38 regular season games played at "The Joe," the Flyers are 13-20-5. That's not including the disastrous 1997 Stanley Cup Final, in which the Red Wings beat the Flyers, 6-1, in Game 3 and. 2-1, in Game 4 in Detroit en route to a sweep.

The arena was built in 1979 and been home to the Red Wings ever since. The city of Detroit will demolish the old building to make room for a new arena that will open in time for the 2017-18 season.

The current Red Wings squad has been inconsistent and seen their record hover around the .500 mark all season. After starting last week off with two wins, Detroit ran into a buzzsaw with the red-hot Columbus Blue Jackets, who are on a five-game win streak of their own.

4. Keep an eye on ...
Flyers: It's sort of hard to take your eyes off Voracek at this point. He's scoring points in bunches and has been almost impossible to take off the puck. He potted the overtime game-winner in the Flyers' 4-3 win over the Red Wings back on Nov. 2. Voracek's playing at a different level right now.

Red Wings: Dylan Larkin is as dynamic as they come, leading the Red Wings with nine goals this year. The Flyers have managed to keep the 20-year-old forward in check. Larkin has just one goal and is a minus-3 in five career games against the orange and black.

5. This and that
• Gostisbehere suffered a bone bruise on his right hand after being hit by a shot in the second period Saturday. Gostisbehere returned to the game, but will be monitored by the Flyers ahead of Sunday's matchup.

•  Detroit is led by their captain Henrik Zetterberg with 20 points (six goals, 14 assists). At 36, Zetterberg has 856 career points in 946 career games, all with the Red Wings.

•  Schenn recorded his second career hat-trick after scoring just one goal in his previous 13. He has three assists in two games against Detroit this season.

•  Forwards Justin Abdelkader (knee), Johan Franzen (concussion) and Darren Helm (shoulder) are all on injured reserve for the Red Wings.
