Doug Mientkiewicz, who now plays for the Dodgers, told Yahoo Sports that when the pair played together at Westminster Christian High School in Miami, "I was with him too much. I was with him for too long. Our team was together, like, 20 hours of the day. Every day."
Roberts' book will claim the embattled Yankees slugger used steroids dating back to high school in the early 1990s.
"He also grew two or three inches," Mientkiewicz told Yahoo. "You're talking about a 15-year-old kid who looked really skinny and scrawny. Then he hit puberty and he grew into a man. Everybody goes through it. So now every 13-to-15-year-old kid is going to be accused of this, because he hits puberty?"
Rodriguez admitted in February that he'd used steroids, but only from 2001-03, and emphasized that he hasn't used since he became a Yankee in 2004. Roberts' book, however, will allege that A-Rod has used steroids since putting on the pinstripes, as well as the high-school use.
"He was with me in high school," said Mientkiewicz, who played with the Yankees in 2007. "In high school, he was more dedicated than anybody I'd ever seen. Can we move forward please?"
Many questions remain unanswered in this story, such as the one asking that Doug Mientkiewicz is still in the big leagues?
