β€œRacist” Note Caused NJ Political Resignation

GOP lawmaker quit over wife's email to Carl Lewis

A GOP official says a freshman New Jersey lawmaker resigned because his wife sent "an offensive and racist" email to the Carl Lewis campaign.

Burlington County Republican Chairman Bill Layton acknowledged Monday that Pat Delany abruptly resigned from the Assembly and said he would not to seek a full term in November because of his wife's missive.

Delaney's wife, Jennifer, sent a disparaging reply after receiving an email blast message from the nine-time Olympic gold medalist's campaign.

Delany announced last month that he intended to resign, citing an unspecified family matter. Layton says Delany decided to leave office to shield his three children from "a hurtful and embarrassing public spectacle involving their mother."

Lewis is running for the state Senate as a Democrat in New Jersey's 8th Legislative District.
