Problems with stink bugs? Don't worry, homeowner Hal Lewis has your possible solution -- a stink bug trap!
NOTE: These directions call for the use of sharp objects.
Here's what you'll need:
- 2-liter soda bottle
- AA Battery (solar last longer)
- Exacto knife or scissors
- Solar powered lamp
- Colored tape (preferably black)
- Water
- Dawn dish detergent
- Velcro (makes it easier to hang the trap from your ceiling or wall, but it's not required)
Here's how to make your trap:
- Take empty soda bottle with label still on and cut with the exacto knife around the bottle on top of the label.
- Remove the label off and throw it away.
- Place the top of the bottle (the piece you just cut) and place it into the bottom half of the bottle with the mouth piece facing down (picture a funnel).
- Tape the bottle starting from the bottom (tape 3/4 the way up -- this blocks the light from going anywhere, but through the top).
- Take apart your solar lamp and place the bottom of the lamp under the soda bottle with the light facing up (switch to a solar battery for longer lasting light).
- Pour 1/8 cup of water through the funnel opening so that that woman travels to the bottom of the bottle.
- Pour 1 tsp. of detergent through the funnel opening as well.
- Optional -- add the Velcro (one half to the light and one half to the bottle so that they can stick together easier)
- Place your trap as close to a window or light as possible (you can add Velcro to the side of the bottle so it will stick to the wall or window, or you can stick a hanger in the top to hang your trap.
- When enough stink bugs land in your trap or whenever you want to get rid of them, dump the stink bugs into the trash can or toilet.
- Add fresh water and detergent.
Viola! Enjoy a stink bug-free summer -- we hope.
