Stolen SUV Slams Into SEPTA Trolley Head-on, Dozens of Passengers Hurt

A SEPTA trolley and sport utility vehicle crashed head-on Wednesday morning landing 27 people in the hospital and investigators say the SUV was stolen.

Two people in the Hyundai Tuscon were seriously hurt when their turned right and directly into the path of a Route 36 trolley at 49th Street and Grays Avenue in Philadelphia’s Kingsessing section around 9:25 a.m., said Philadelphia Police.

All 26 passengers and the driver on the trolley were taken by bus to Penn Presbyterian Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said SEPTA.

One man in the SUV had to be cut out of the badly-damaged SUV. Medics rushed both men to Penn Presbyterian Hospital in extremely critical condition, said police.

SEPTA supplied shuttle buses from 49th and Woodland to the Eastwick Loop to get passengers around the scene.
