Philadelphia Officers on Trial in Beating of Scooter Rider Slain in Separate Incident

The trial has begun for two Philadelphia police officers charged with wrongly beating a man in 2013 who has since been fatally shot.

Philly.com reports the trial of patrol officers Sean McKnight and Kevin Robinson began Wednesday.

The officers are charged with assault, conspiracy and false arrest for allegedly knocking 23-year-old Najee Rivera off his scooter and beating him without provocation in May 2013.

The officers were charged after Rivera's girlfriend found neighborhood surveillance video that prosecutors say contradicts the officers' claims that Rivera attacked them.

Attorneys for the officers told a jury in opening statements that Rivera's arrest was "by-the-book police work."

Rivera died in December, 15 days after he was wounded during a street fight.

The officers' trial continues Thursday.
